thursday 11th September 2008:
security & compliance for the NHS

As exemplified by the very recent discovery of top-secret government documents left accidentally on a train, review and reform of information security and governance practices is rapidly becoming the public sector’s most urgent priority.

6 months ago, after the well-publicised loss of Child Benefit recipients’ data by HM Revenue and Customs, NHS Chief David Nicholson tasked all NHS trust chief executives with urgently reviewing methods for information transfer, storage and management. How has your department responded?

This ‘round table’ event is designed to encourage input and feedback from NHS trusts around these topics, as well as providing insight into selected technical discussion areas from experienced professionals and independent consultants.

Key Speakers

JEFF THORPE - Security: Perception or Reality?

  • Formerly Regional Head of Information at the Northern & Yorkshire Regional Office for 7 years, working closely with the Information Policy Unit, NHSIA and NHS organisations on the development and implementation of NHS Information and IT Strategy
  • Independent consultant providing guidance to organisations directly or indirectly influenced by the NHS National Programme for IT. Worked as part of the Gateway review team on the establishment of the Health and Social Care Information Centre
  • Latterly worked for Accenture and CSC providing internal specialist advice on NHS policy initiatives and in a commercial capacity developing new areas where the LSP could provide added value services.

SIMON HANCOCK - Information Assurance and Governance

  • CTO of a London borough with extensive experience in strategic vision and operational delivery
  • Chair of ISfL Steering Group, developing governance, direction and business plans to meet the challenges of Information Security across the public sector in London (www.isfl.org.uk)
  • Member of the Cabinet Office Accreditors’ forum participating in and influencing the role of accredited information system within the UK public sector
  • Member of the Security Accreditation Review Committee (SARC), involved in the review and production of national information assurance and risk management standards.

We look forward to seeing you there.
